The Basics of Goldfish Care.

The Basics of Goldfish Care.

Taking care of golden fish is no different than taking care of any other fish. A clean house with a house to grow in, some food to be served to them at the front door and some decor to give the place some class. No less than that, some of their common necessities are a bit different than aquarium fish. It’s not hard to meet them, but doing it is the key to keeping a happy and healthy goldfish.

Size

Leaving behind most people looking to keep goldfish, it seems that the number one thing they get is BIG. Even in the case of smaller species, adults are expected to easily reach 8 inches in length. Truly any single goldfish below 30 gallons is too small for the long term and the tank needs to be bigger if you want more than one. Fish will be stunned if there is not enough space to grow, which can lead to health problems and possibly early death.

Climate

These can generally be considered as tropical temperatures, which are sold with a variety of tropical fish biv, the goldfish is actually considered a species of cold water. In fact, they can tolerate temperatures close to freezing, although in aquariums somewhat lower than the preferred 70s (or about 18 to 23 centigrade) in the mid-60s. Although they work well at low temperatures, a heater is still not a bad idea. Temperature fluctuations are never a good thing for any fish. A heater ensures that things don’t change too quickly, especially on cold days.

Maintenance

Goldfish also differ from most common aquarium fish in that they are quite messy. Their digestive system works somewhat differently from other fish and may be considered somewhat inefficient. Add to that the fact that these are just plain big fish and it’s easy to see why they need a lot of filtration to keep their tanks clean. You will usually want about twice as much filtration as you normally would for the tank size. Good performance and mechanical filtration are of special importance to keep the bottom of the tank free from waste. This means regular maintenance is even more important. Even a layer with a good filter feels quite dirty for vacuuming.

They need unique digestion systems as well as unique foods. When choosing a food for your goldfish, make sure that the goldfish is sold exclusively as a national dish. Ordinary tropical food will probably prove too tough to digest for garbage tanks and malnourished fish. However, like other fish they will get annoyed with the same thing day after day so don’t forget to change their diet now. You can even branch out into new options. Goldfish quite like beans and can take bits of other cooked vegetables.
